Beard Oil: How to Use It and How Much You Actually Need

By Men's Best Haircut · Williamsburg, Brooklyn · October 3, 2026 · 5 min read

Beard oil is not cologne for your chin — it is skincare that happens to sit under a beard. The skin beneath your beard produces less oil than the rest of your face can distribute, so without help it dries out, flakes, and itches. A few drops of the right oil, applied the right way, fixes all of that. Here is the routine we recommend to every bearded client in the chair.

What Beard Oil Actually Does

Beard oil is a blend of lightweight carrier oils (jojoba, argan, sweet almond) and sometimes essential oils for scent. It does two jobs at once: it conditions the beard hair itself, making it softer and less wiry, and — more importantly — it moisturizes the skin underneath, which is what stops the dryness, flaking, and itch that make guys give up on growing a beard. The shine is a side effect; the skincare is the point.

How Much to Use

More beard, more oil — but the scale is drops, not handfuls. Use this as your guide:

Beard lengthDrops
Stubble to 1 inch2–3 drops
1–3 inches4–6 drops
3–6 inches6–8 drops
Over 6 inches8–10 drops

If your beard feels greasy an hour later, you used too much. If it feels dry and rough by evening, add a drop or two next time. You will dial in your number within a week.

The 4-Step Application

  1. Apply after a shower, on a damp beard. Warm water opens the pores and the hair cuticle, so the oil absorbs instead of sitting on top. Pat the beard with a towel until damp, not dripping.
  2. Warm the oil in your palms. Drop the oil into one palm, rub both hands together to spread it evenly. This also wakes up the scent.
  3. Work it into the skin first, then the hair. This is the step that matters most. Massage upward against the grain with your fingertips so the oil reaches the skin underneath — that is where the dryness lives. Then smooth downward over the beard hair to coat the lengths and tame flyaways.
  4. Comb it through. Run a wide-tooth comb or a boar-bristle brush through the beard to distribute the oil evenly and train the direction of growth. Finish by shaping with your hands.

When to Apply

Once a day is enough for most beards — morning, after your shower. In winter or very dry climates, a second light application in the evening helps. If your beard is short stubble, every other day is fine. The goal is consistently moisturized skin, not a schedule you have to think about.

Common Mistakes

Barber's shortcut: If your beard itches in the first two weeks of growth, that is almost always dry skin, not the hair itself. Beard oil twice a day during the awkward phase will get most guys through it without shaving it all off.

Beard Oil FAQs

Does beard oil help beards grow faster?
No — nothing topical speeds up growth. What oil does is keep the hair you have healthy, soft, and breakage-free, so you keep more length as it grows.
Beard oil vs. beard balm — which do I need?
Oil for conditioning and skin health; balm for hold and shaping. Many guys use both: oil first, then a small amount of balm to shape. If your beard is short, oil alone is enough.
Can I use coconut oil or olive oil instead?
You can, but they are heavier and more likely to clog pores than jojoba or argan-based beard oils, which are formulated to absorb quickly. Dedicated beard oil is worth it.
How long does a bottle of beard oil last?
A standard 1 oz bottle lasts 2–3 months with daily use on a medium beard. A little goes a long way.
